Are there any rule of thumbs for size of the staging and storage area in a warehouse?
Typically, the storage area accounts for 70% to 80% of the warehouse space. Dock and staging area take up 10% to 15%. The remaining space are for non-activity area (such as offices).
Is there any calculation method we can use to determine a good estimate of the docking space (speedbay) required?
You can use the below formula as a guide. To provide an estimation.
Dock Space Requirement = roundup [(number of loads received daily * hours required to unload from truck and stage)/ hours per work shift] * number of pallets per load * size per pallet
Total space required = Dock Space requirement * 2 (space for working and travel area as well)
I think 80% to 90%
