A 3PL (third-party logistics) provider offers outsourced logistics services, which encompass anything that involves the management of one or more facets of procurement and fulfillment activities. In business, 3PL has a broad meaning that applies to any service contract that involves storing or shipping items.

1PL – A party who requires the inventory to be transported from one location to another.
2PL – A carrier who owns the transportation assets. Example, shipping lines and truck companies.
3PL – A company who provides “outsourced” logistics services to companies.
4PL – A firm who helps the companies to manage the entire supply chain. Example, control tower
3PL services includes warehousing, inventory/order management, value added services (kitting), shipping, transportation, procurement, brokering, customs clearance, last mile delivery.

Some companies still prefer to run the operations themselves rather than engagung 3PL. They have more control over their supply chain and logistics.
